There are many different ice cream makers on the market today. It is very easy to make ice cream with these machines that require a limited amount of skill to operate.
Electric Ice Cream Makers
Electric ice cream making machines all work roughly the same way in that they have an electric motor as a power source to stir the mixture. The only real difference is in the way the cooling process is performed.
You have three types of electric ice cream making machines. The first is called a counter-top machine it works because of the double walled bowl contains a solution that freezes when you put the bowl in the freezer a day before you plan to make your ice cream. You place the bowl in the machine and then add the mixture. The paddle will rotate and stir the mixture, which will gradually freeze creating your ice cream within 20-30 minutes.
The second type of electric ice cream you can buy is the small freezer unit machines. These are put inside the freezer and work just like a food processor. There are also more expensive electric ice cream makers on the market. These work really well and don't require any pre freezing. These machines are large and are not really used in small kitchens. Advantages of these large ice cream making machines is that they are ready to go immediately and your ice cream is ready to eat between 20-30 minutes.
Manual Ice Cream Makers
The old style manual ice cream making machines have a hand-cranked mechanism, which turns a paddle to stir the mixture. There are two bowls in these machines. You need to put ice and salt in the first bowl and the ice cream mixture in the second one. This is a very time consuming process with the salt melting the ice and freezing your mixture. You will need to keep replenishing your ice and salt until you have made enough ice cream.
Homemade Ice Cream Advantages
One of the great things about making your own ice cream is that you can put whatever ingredients you want in your ice cream. You can make your ice cream as healthy or sinful as you want it to be with the added advantage of using fresh fruit when making your ice cream.
Homemade Ice Cream Without An Ice Cream Maker
To make homemade ice cream without an ice cream maker you will need the following ingredients:
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup milk
- 3 beaten egg yolks
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 2 cups whipping cream
*optional 2 cups of strawberries or any other fruit that you would like to try with cup of sugar.
Method:
First you will need to prepare the ingredients which you can do beforehand so that you can quickly get into the fun of making your own ice cream.
Put the milk, salt, and sugar in a pot and stir the three beaten egg yolks into the mixture. Cook this until bubbles begin to form around the edges of the mixture before letting it cool at room temperature.
Once this has cooled you can add the whipped cream and stir in the vanilla extract.
You will need two zip lock plastic bags - a smaller one to put your ice cream mixture in and a second larger bag that you will fill 1/2 to 3/4 full with ice and a cup of salt.
Science now plays a part as you knead the bags ensuring you make as much contact between the ice and the smaller bag as you can. This results in the ice melting drawing heat from your hands and your ice cream. This process takes about 10 minutes to turn your mixture into ice cream.
Be careful when opening your bag - you don't want the saltwater getting in and ruining your freshly made ice cream. If you want to add your favourite fruit to your ice cream then you will have to add the fruit to the small bag prior to placing it in the second bag.
